Stornoway Quarrying grows through site acquisition
Posted on 04 September, 2009 in Stornoway News
Stornoway Quarrying has recently acquired a new production site in Northern Tasmania to further expand its range of innovative products to both the Tasmanian and interstate market.
The former Industrial Sands and Silica site is now owned and managed through Stornoway Quarrying.
Located at Bakers Beach just outside Port Sorell, the site allows Stornoway Quarrying to offer a range of new products through the extraction and processing of high quality washed, dried and graded sands and decorative river stone (shingle).
The raw sand is extracted from a location in Birralea, Tasmania, and then processed for multiple applications including filter sand (pools, aquaculture and agriculture), building and construction (pipelaying, paving, concrete) as well blasting, sand pits, rendering and golf courses.
Due to the washing process the sand meets strict requirements of being silt and organic free leaving only the purist of pure sand. The product will be available in bulk one ton bags, by the truck and trailer and through selected garden and hardware retail outlets in 20kg bags.
The other new range the quarry will process is a selection of stone products sourced locally such as river stone which is extracted from old flood plains in Mersey Lea, northern Tasmania.
The Mersey Lea stone is available in grades from 5-10mm through to oversize 100mm and is washed to bring out the stunning natural hues of the stone. The colouring of the stone is rich deep chocolate, caramel and brown quartz which when wet provide an incredible sheen making this rock perfect for water features, concrete aggregate and landscaping purposes.
In addition to Mersey Lea, Stornoway Quarrying is also offering the Birralea range of stone which is a distinct white gold crushed stone that compacts extremely well for use in paths and driveways and is perfect for urban garden beds due to its fire retardant nature.
After the extraction of all resources, Stornoway takes particular care in replacing the mined area with the original top soil for ongoing farming use in the case of stone and rehabilitates the land with native vegetation planting for sand as part of its ongoing commitment to preserving the environment.
The acquisition of this site shows Stornoway Quarrying’s commitment to the region and investing in Tasmania to produce new and innovative products for the market.
