Stornoway Maintenance wins North-West roads maintenance contract

Stornoway to keep North-West roads safe

When the going gets tough on North West Tasmanian roads, it’s comforting to know that there is a dedicated and skilled maintenance crew ready to swing into action.

Tasmanian infrastructure company, Stornoway Group, has recently taken up a three-year multi-million dollar State Government contract to manage and maintain roads and bridges in the North-West and West Coast.

Stornoway has established a strong presence in the region, hiring 24 staff who are based in depots in East Devonport, Queenstown and Waratah. A fourth depot is in the process of also being opened in Burnie.

“As a local Northern Tasmanian family company, Stornoway is proud to have won this contract ahead of strong competition from multi-national companies,” Stornoway Chief Executive Officer, Tim Gardner, said. “The company has a strong record in infrastructure development and management, having held the Southern Tasmanian Long Term Road Maintenance contract for the past 10 years in partnership with CSR Emoleum and building the West Coast Link Road.”

“With this new contract, we are committed to continue to deliver our high standard of infrastructure maintenance services to improve the safety of roads and bridges for the benefit of the North-West community.”

Stornoway’s North-West Manager, Rod Williams, said his crews cover a large area, undertaking work from Deloraine to Smithton to Queenstown.

“We monitor and maintain road surfaces, clear away trees that fall on roads, clear off ice and snow, and prepare roads for re-surfacing,” Mr. Williams said.

“Most of our employees are long term local residents, so they really know the roads and seasonal conditions.

“That local knowledge and experience is particularly important during winter when some of the roads and highways in the region can be treacherous due to ice and snow,” he said.

Mr. Williams said roadwork crews make an important contribution to the local community, but noted they were not always welcomed by motorists.

“We try to minimise any inconvenience to motorists when undertaking work. However, the safety of our employees is a priority, so I would appeal to drivers to slow down when travelling past a road crew.

“A friendly wave is always welcome too.”

Stornoway is a diversified infrastructure group, supplying industrial products and services to people managing water, transport, mining and other significant infrastructure systems.
