Case Study

Rio Tinto Mesa ‘A’ Iron Ore Project, Pilbara, W.A.

The Mesa A / Warramboo mine, about 50 kilometres from Pannawonica in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, will have an initial production of 20 Mtpa, increasing to 25Mtpa by 2011. The mine will sustain production of Robe Valley pisolite ore at 32Mtpa over the next decade. Current production from the Mesa J deposit, now nearing the end of its mine life, will reduce to 7Mtpa with Mesa A providing the balance.

Industry:
Mining
Project Type:
Aqeo® AS 20 m3/day Class ‘B’ Recycled Water STP and Aqeo® UF 16 m3/day Membrane Polishing system

Challenge

HWE Mining required a prompt solution for two (2) separate Transportable Package Wastewater Treatment Plants. Class ‘A’ recycled water was required to meet HWE / Rio Tinto’s on-site sustainability commitment allowing the recycled water to be used for applications such as; dust suppression, equipment wash downs, irrigation etc.

Stornoway Water was able to provide both plants in a short timeframe and to meet the recycled water requirements of Class ‘A’ recycled water for reuse in dust suppression and irrigation.

HWE plan to reuse and relocate the package treatment plants for future projects. Stornoway’s modular plant design allows the systems to be easily transported to new locations as required.

Solution

Stornoway Water proposed a packaged AQEO treatment system capable of treating the wastewater to a very high quality to meet Class ‘A’ classification for recycled water.

Due to the urgent requirement, Stornoway was able to offer two (2) refurbished AQEO AS Class ‘B’ systems that had just completed a hire/lease contract and combined with the fast track manufacture of two (2) AQEO UF Membrane Polishing systems we were able to provide the client with a timely solution that will produce recycled water to meet the required Class ‘A’ effluent quality.
